CBCLife is operated by Classrooms Built Better For Life, a company registered in Kenya. We are the data controller for the information described on this page. This policy explains what we collect, why, and how you can have it removed.
What we collect
When a parent or teacher creates an account, we collect a phone number or email address, a password, and a name.
When a parent adds a learner, we collect the learner's name, grade and school, and generate a PIN so the learner can sign in on their own device.
As learners use CBCLife, we record their quiz and practice answers, mock exam attempts, and any work they upload to their portfolio.
We keep a record of payments, including the amount, date and plan. Card and M-Pesa details are handled entirely by our payment provider and never reach us.
We log the device used when a learner signs in with a PIN, so we can detect unusual activity on an account.
On your first visit we create a random device id and store it in your browser. It holds no information about you or your device, and it lets us notice when many accounts are used in one browser. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data.
When you use CBCLife, we use your internet connection to estimate your country, region and town. We don't store your IP address or precise location.
Why we collect it
To provide the service: showing the right curriculum content for a learner's grade, saving their progress, letting their teacher review submitted work, and managing subscriptions.
We do not show advertising in CBCLife, and we do not sell or share personal data with advertisers or data brokers.
Sharing
Learners in Grade 7 and above can share a link to CBCLife from within the app, for example to WhatsApp. This link contains no personal information about the learner — no name, school, grade or results — and anyone opening it is directed to the standard sign-up page.
Children's data
Learner accounts for children under Grade 7 are created by a parent or guardian, who provides consent on the child's behalf. Learners in Grade 7 and above may create their own account.
A learner's information is visible to the parent or guardian who created the account, and to teachers reviewing work the learner has submitted to them. It is not visible to other learners or other families.
Where your data is held
Our database is hosted in the European Union, in Sweden. This means your information is transferred outside Kenya and stored under European data protection law, which provides a comparable standard of protection to Kenyan law.
Payments are processed by Pesapal, a payment service provider regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya.
How long we keep it
We keep account and learner data for as long as the account is active, and for twelve months after a subscription lapses, in case you return. After that it is deleted.
Portfolio uploads are deleted when the account is deleted.
Payment records are kept for seven years, as Kenyan tax law requires.
Your rights
You can ask us to show you what data we hold about you or your child, correct anything that is wrong, or delete it entirely.
Email info@thecbclife.com and we will action your request within 30 days.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner in Kenya.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update this page and note the date below.
